I`ve never raced at Thruxton before - handful of reasons but the main ones being....it`s a long way away, its very fast and it eats tyres.
I say never raced, I`ve also never driven round there either so wanted to book on for some testing but due to circumstance we ended up at Castle Combe a few days earlier to acquaint ourselves with the high speed nature both circuits share.
I was meant to be car sharing for this round but unfortunately my co pilot has some issues and wasn`t able to join me, so I was going in solo.
No we`ve all experienced rain, there is of course, rain, then there is , rain - then further along the scale there is Rain Rain - Qualifying for us was actually in the RAIN RAIN RAIN. It was horrendous and having no circuit knowledge I really struggled to find any pace or confidence. I was experimenting with braking points, lines, apexes, you name it but I couldn`t get anything hooked up and qualified last of all the Pumas.
The race wasn`t much better I`m afraid, the weather had cleared up a bit but it was still pretty wet out there, and while I was getting quicker lap by lap it wasn`t enough and i finished last of the Puma`s but classified 4th of 5 due to John Boult`s retirement.
I`ll not let this put me off Thruxton though and would race there again no problem, just want to get some laps in beforehand to get my eye in thats all.
On to the next!
Anglesey in early July for the 24 Hour Race - Bring it on.
